Grandma’s Tips for the Best Poultry Dressing

Achieving the perfect balance of moisture and crunch comes down to a few essential vintage kitchen secrets:

  • Use Dry or Stale Bread: Slightly dry or toasted bread cubes absorb the broth and seasonings much better without turning mushy. If your bread is fresh, bake the cubes at 300°F for 10–15 minutes to dry them out first.
  • Sauté Your Aromatics: Always cook your diced onions and celery in plenty of real butter until soft and translucent before tossing them with the bread. This releases their natural sweet flavor and ensures no crunchy raw veggies in the final dish.
  • Add Broth Gradually: Pour your warm broth over the bread mixture a little at a time until the bread is moist but not swimming. You want every piece coated without leaving a pool at the bottom of the bowl.
  • Bake Uncovered for a Crispy Top: If you like extra crunchy edges, bake the dressing uncovered for the last 10–15 minutes of cooking time.
