Spread the love

Grandma always believed that breakfast should start with something bright to wake up your senses, and this Grapefruit with Ginger Sugar does exactly that. By pairing juicy, tangy grapefruit halves with a warm, spiced topping of sweet sugar and fresh-ground ginger, you create a breakfast starter that feels incredibly fancy but takes only minutes to put together.

It is the perfect balance of tart citrus, sweet caramelized sugar, and a subtle spicy kick of ginger that will completely transform the way you think about eating grapefruit.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

You will love this ginger sugar grapefruit because it turns a simple piece of winter fruit into a warm, comforting gourmet treat. When you pop these under the broiler, the ginger-sugar mixture melts and caramelizes into a beautiful, crackly crust that cuts right through the natural bitterness of the grapefruit.

It is a completely low-stress, quick breakfast or light dessert that looks stunning on a plate but requires almost zero effort. If you want to create a beautifully balanced, cozy weekend breakfast spread, serve these warm, caramelized grapefruits right before a hot plate of my Cornflake Coated Crispy Bacon!

Grandma’s Tips

Section the Fruit First: Grandma’s best trick for mess-free eating is to take a sharp paring knife and slide it around the outer edge of the grapefruit, and then slice gently along both sides of each individual segment before adding your sugar. This loosens the fruit so you can easily scoop out perfect, juicy bites with a spoon.

Caramelize Under the Broiler: To get that signature, crème-brûlée-style crackly top, place your sugared grapefruit halves on a baking sheet and broil them for just 3 to 5 minutes. Keep a close eye on them—you want the sugar to bubble up and turn a beautiful golden brown without burning!

Let it Cool Slightly: Because the caramelized sugar gets extremely hot under the broiler, let the grapefruits rest on the counter for about 2 to 3 minutes before serving. This allows the sugar crust to harden slightly and ensures nobody burns their tongue on the first delicious bite.
