Braised Beef with Cabbage is two of my favorite dishes all rolled into one. Well, another weekend is here and so is another one of my grandma’s one-dish meals. There are many different ways of making this dish, and this is my and my family’s take on it.

It is inexpensive and so easy to make, but it definitely does not skimp on flavor! Braised beef with cabbage is also a gluten-free and paleo-friendly recipe. In case you are interested in knowing, cabbage belongs to the “Brassica,” family which also includes Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, and broccoli.

Equipment

  • 1 large skillet with a lid
  • 1 large serving spoon
  • 1 knife
  • 1 liquid measuring cup

Ingredients 

  • 2 tbsp salad oil
  • lb beef chuck cut in 1 1/2-inch cubes
  • 2 onions thinly sliced
  • 1 apple pared, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 2 cans 1-lb size tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 tsps sugar
  • tsp pepper
  • 2 tsps salt
  • 1 head green cabbage 1 1/2 lb, washed and cut in 8 wedges
  • 4 medium potatoes pared and quartered lengthwise
  • 3 tbsps fresh cilantro

Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a large skillet. Then add the beef, and brown it on all sides. Now remove the beef from the skillet.
  • Add the onions to skillet, and let it cook slowly until golden brown. Add the browned beef, stir in 1 cup water, add apple and tomatoes, then sprinkle with salt, pepper, and sugar.
  • Bring this mixture to boil, then reduce the heat, and let this simmer, covered with a lid for about 2 hours.
  • Add potatoes and cabbage to the meat mixture, then let this simmer covered for about 20 more minutes longer, or until the vegetables are tender. Sprinkle with cilantro before serving.

Interesting Facts about Cabbage

Cabbage is rich in vitamins C and K, as well as an excellent source of fiber, vitamin B6, folate, and manganese.  It also contains iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and potassium.  The sulfur in cabbage is essential for the production of keratin, a protein substance necessary for healthy hair, skin, and nails.

This is such a great dish and smells so yummy while cooking, which is definitely a simple dish to make, and I normally cheat and while it is baking, I am busy normally doing laundry, reading a good book, or most times watching a good movie. I am sure you will love it as much as I and my family and friends do.
